Mgr. et Mgr. Milan Motl, Ph.D. (b. 1977) is one of the most successful young Czech choir choirmasters. He earned his Master’s Degree in music and history from the University of Hradec Králové. He also studied solo voice and choral conducting. He studied orchestra conducting privately at Jiří Portych. He finalized his university education at the University of Ostrava where he got his doctorate.
His first conducting experiences were in choir leading the preparatory class of the well-known Bonifantes Boys Choir in Pardubice (1999 – 2003) where he later became the Assistant Choirmaster. In 2002 he became the Artistic Director of the KOS Mixed Choir and KOKOS Chamber Choir at the College of Pedagogy in Litomyšl. Among other responsibilities, his personal mission is to recruit young talented musicians in the field of solo singing and conducting.
Under Mr. Motl’s leadership the KOS Choirs won many national and international awards in choral festivals and competitions, the choirs have undertaken a few concert tours in Europe as well as in Canada and the USA. Personally, Mr. Motl won several special Jury Awards for his work as a conductor (for best performances of required repertoire, best arrangements as well as conducting performance). He is highly esteemed by choir music experts for his interpretation of contemporary music. In 2013, Mr. Motl received the Choirmaster Junior Award from the Czech Choirs Union for his outstanding work in the field of youth choirs. He and the KOS Choir also won the Grand Prix Award at the International Festival in Letohrad for the best music performance (2012). Mr. Motl was awarded the Merit Award in the Field of Education and Culture by the Town Council of Litomyšl in 2013, and by Pardubice Region in 2017 the Merit Award in the Field of Art and for Presentation of the Region abroad.
Milan Motl is a member of national choral singing organizations. He is also a member of the NIPOS-ARTAMA Expert Council for Youth Choirs in Prague and a member of the Czech Choir Union Council. He is an active singer as a tenor soloist and he works as a voice consultant. He is often invited to be a adjudicator in solo vocal and choral contests. He also presents lecturers and choral workshops nationally and abroad.
